World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Makes History

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade sold 2.4 million copies on the first day that it was released. At $40 a pop, that comes out to $96,000,000. (96 million!!!) Granted, they didn’t make all of that 96 million dollars, but still. They’ve probably sold another million since. With 8 million subscribers worldwide (and growing), I expect 6-7 million copies to be sold by the middle of the year. That’s insane. World of Warcraft has the largest subscriber base out of any MMORPG ever created. Oh, and another million = $40,000,000. So, if we take out 20 million for various fees… well, even if they paid 40 million in fees, that’s still nearly one hundred million United States Dollars!

Oh, and they are making $120,000,000 per month off of subscribers. That is pure cash in their pockets. The only fees they pay are taxes and credit card company fees. And the subscriber base is growing. Think of how many people resubscribed just to play The Burning Crusade. Wow.

Great job, Blizzard. Anyone want to hook me up with a job there?

Sony Ships 2 Million Playstation 3’s

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Link.

Interesting. I’ve seen them bulk stacked at Best Buy. (I even saw someone pick one up and check out in front of me) Even though they are stacked, think about it. By December 31st, they shipped only 1 million PS3’s and they were nowhere to be found. Add a million to that. That’s a lot of consoles. A lot more than what is currently sitting around.

Sony also mentioned that it may not hit its goal of 6 million by the end of March. It estimated that 4.5 million would be shipped. I’m very surprised that there aren’t any manufacturing flaws. Looks like Sony took their time, whereas Microsoft rushed their Xbox360 and are having to shrink the die size on the processor. Good job, Microsoft.

Playstation 3 Launch Outsold Xbox 360 Launch

Monday, January 8th, 2007

It seems that the Playstation 3 launch has outsold the Xbox 360 launch. This is great news to my ears, especially because I despise Microsoft. The blog (which is a trustworthy one) reports that 600,000 Xbox 360 units were sold in the same time period that 1 million (1,000,000 :D) Playstation 3 units were sold. Granted, the PS3 number is technically units shipped, but head out to your local Best Buy or GameStop and ask for one.. it won’t be there. Now, let’s wait and see how the European launch fares…

E-mail Notification

If anyone has been e-mailing me at anything other than my default e-mail addresses, please begin to do so. I have removed my catch-all, as I was getting 400+ spam e-mails per day from it. It has become far too much.
